Running from 6 – 10 November, HJ Housing Week involves webinars, in-person events, videos and blogs focusing on an area of housing every day.
The first day of our HJ Housing Week 2023 looks at finance and governance issues within the housing sector. Our Banking team have collaborated with Triodos Bank who have been financing housing projects for over 40 years. With a strong focus on community and sustainability, Peter Borgers who leads on the bank’s social housing activities, joins Rowena Downie Partner in Hugh James’ Banking Team to discuss the latest opportunities for finance teams in the sector.
The second day of our HJ Housing Week 2023 takes place in person and celebrates its 23rd year bringing the sector together to discuss the latest challenges and opportunities housing officers face. Sessions focus on managing antisocial behaviour, protecting your staff, committal hearings and the latest lessons learned from the new Renting Homes (Wales) Act, which came into force in December 2022.
The third day of our HJ Housing Week 2023 focuses on commercial property. Our construction and development teams help with horizon gazing for 2024 – looking ahead to some of the key construction law developments in 2024, including the latest JCT suite of contracts.
The fourth day of our HJ Housing Week 2023 focuses on Employment & HR. We look at the latest case law developments as well as the key legislative changes that lie ahead in the employment space for 2023 and beyond. The session considers the newly issued guidance on Alternative Dispute Resolution, the new ACAS mental health guidance on reasonable adjustments and the government’s proposals to limit non-compete clauses. Our team also discuss with chief executive Hayley Selway how the sector in Wales is making significant leaps with a pioneering approach to equality and diversity that properly addresses cultural backgrounds and neurodiversity in recruitment processes.
Keeping tenants safe is undoubtedly a key priority for all involved in the sector. Achieving the right balance of responding swiftly to genuine claims of disrepair and managing the commercial challenges of vexatious claims fuelled by poorly advised tenants can be less clear cut. Our final day of HJ Housing Week 2023 tackles these issues head on, highlighting the latest guidance from the judges’ bench, the collaborative approach being taken by the sector as a whole and how we can help. The team are also joined by regulatory law specialist and Senior Associate, Justin Davies who combines his expertise on fire safety with our housing management team.
